High school sports news of the week

The Riverhead Blue Waves and Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats have been making waves in high school sports with their impressive performances in various games.

In boys lacrosse, the Riverhead Blue Waves secured a crucial 11-4 victory against Middle Country, setting the tone for a successful season. Led by standout players Zach Maligres, Griffin Sumwalt, and Logan Dempsey, the Blue Waves are off to a scorching 4-1 start and are eyeing their first playoff berth since 2019. Their upcoming games against Lindenhurst, Commack, and Patchogue-Medford will be crucial in maintaining their winning streak.

On the baseball diamond, the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats continued their winning streak with a 6-0 victory over Southampton. Pitcher Gordon Votruba was dominant on the mound, striking out six batters and allowing only two hits. With major contributions from Christian Cox and Kyle Stella at the plate, the Wildcats have scored 29 runs and given up only eight in their first four games. Their upcoming games against Southampton, Bayport-Blue Point, and Bayport-Blue Point will test their skills further.

In girls lacrosse, both the Riverhead Blue Waves and Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats have faced tough competition. The Blue Waves have struggled in the early part of the season, losing four consecutive games. Despite scoring goals, they have given up too many on the defensive end. The Wildcats had a close match against Islip, ultimately falling short in a 7-6 loss. Both teams will look to bounce back in their upcoming games against Smithtown East, Half Hollow Hills, Westhampton, Hauppauge, and Mattituck.

In boys tennis, both Shoreham-Wading River and Riverhead have started the season strong with victories over West Islip and Central Islip, respectively. Standout performances from players like Raj Ramharack and Benjamin Dono have propelled their teams to success. The upcoming matches against Hampton Bays, Westhampton, and William Floyd will test their skills and determination.

Overall, the Riverhead Blue Waves and Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats are showcasing their talent and determination in high school sports, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
