Speaking Truth Across Political Divides: A Author’s Perspective

In her new book, “I Never Thought of It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times,” author Monica Guzman shares a personal story that many can relate to in today’s politically charged climate. Guzman, a liberal, describes the tension that arose when she visited her parents, who are enthusiastic Trump supporters, to watch the 2020 election results.

Despite the deep political divide between them, Guzman has managed to maintain a relationship with her parents by practicing trust and candor. She emphasizes the importance of curiosity in difficult conversations and the need to approach challenging topics with an open mind.

As part of the Talking Sense project, a collaboration between MPR News and Braver Angels, Guzman shares her insights on navigating tough conversations with loved ones who hold opposing political views. She advises engaging in activities together and focusing on repairing relationships before delving into divisive issues.

Guzman also suggests asking questions that invite storytelling rather than reasons, as stories can help people understand each other’s perspectives better. She encourages individuals to challenge assumptions and reflect on their own motivations before engaging in political discussions.

In a time of heightened polarization, Guzman’s experience serves as a reminder that it is possible to have meaningful conversations with those who hold different beliefs. By approaching these conversations with curiosity, empathy, and a willingness to listen, we can bridge the divide and strengthen our relationships with others.
