The Ishpeming High School girls basketball team made a statement in the Division 4 state semifinal game at the Breslin Center on Thursday. Led by senior standout Jenna Maki, the Hematites dominated Fowler with a final score of 75-40.
Maki put on a show, scoring a game-high 30 points and leading her team to victory. She showcased her skills throughout the game, keeping pace with the Eagles on her own for most of the matchup. With 22 points at halftime and 29 points at the end of the third quarter, Maki’s performance was nothing short of impressive.
In addition to her scoring prowess, Maki also became Ishpeming’s all-time leading scorer with her performance in the game. Head coach Ryan Reichel praised Maki for her transformation as a player and credited her leadership for the team’s success this season.
Fowler, a team with a history of success in the semifinals, struggled to contain Maki and the relentless full-court pressure defense of Ishpeming. The Eagles committed 34 turnovers in the game, unable to match the intensity of the Hematites.
With the win, Ishpeming advances to the championship game for the first time since 1974. The team’s journey this season has been a tribute to the past, with players from the 1974 team joining in the celebration of the current team’s success.
Despite facing a seasoned opponent in Fowler, Ishpeming showed no signs of nerves and dominated from the opening tip. The team’s strong start set the tone for the game, and they never looked back, securing a convincing victory.
Ishpeming will now look to complete their dream season in the championship game on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Hematites have overcome obstacles and made history along the way, and they are determined to finish their season on a high note.
