Residents of Birmingham were left scratching their heads as a canal in the area turned a bright shade of green. The Canal & River Trust West Midlands assured the public that there was no cause for alarm, as they had intentionally added dye to the Tame Valley Canal for testing purposes.
The charity explained that the dye was being used to track down any potential leaks in the canal. They emphasized that the dye was harmless to wildlife and would naturally disperse over the next few days.
The Tame Valley Canal, which spans over eight and a half miles, runs from the Walsall Canal to Salford Junction. Social media users couldn’t resist making light of the situation, with some joking that the canal had been dyed green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, albeit a few days late.
In a statement on their website, the Canal & River Trust mentioned that they were investigating the source of water near Gorse Farm safety gate in Hamstead. Despite not finding a clear leak, they had conducted repairs in one potential area and planned to refill the canal to test for any further issues.
The charity reassured the public that the green hue was nothing to worry about and thanked residents for their understanding during the testing process. As the dye gradually dissipates, the canal is expected to return to its normal color in the coming days.
