Campustown Restaurant Faces Temporary Closure Due to Lack of Hot Water

A popular restaurant in Campustown, Conrad’s Grill, recently had to temporarily close its doors due to a lack of hot water. The closure was prompted by a broken water heater, which impaired the employees’ ability to wash their hands and clean dishes at appropriate temperatures.

Michael Rane, one of the managers of the LLC that owns Conrad’s Grill, explained that despite efforts from a vendor to fix the issue, they had to switch vendors to finally get the water heater repaired. The restaurant is now awaiting recertification from the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District before they can reopen.

A red placard on the window of the eatery, dated July 18, states that it is closed due to an “imminent health hazard.” According to the health district, an imminent health hazard is any violation or condition that could potentially harm the health of consumers.

Sarah Michaels, the director of environmental health for CUPHD, reassured the public that the closure is not permanent. “We are waiting for that issue to be resolved so that they can request a reinspection,” she said.

Conrad’s Grill is taking the necessary steps to ensure that they are in compliance with health regulations before reopening, especially with the upcoming busy season when students return to campus. Stay tuned for updates on when the restaurant will be back in business.
