Man in US court over UK crash that left nurse unable to walk | Crime

A US citizen who allegedly left a mental health nurse unable to walk for six weeks after a car crash in the UK has appeared in a Texas court a year on from the collision.

Issac Calderon, who gave his name to the authorities as Isac Alejandro Calderon, appeared in a federal court in the southern district of Texas on Monday regarding a potential extradition to the UK.

He is accused of causing Elizabeth Donowho serious injury by driving a silver Honda Accord dangerously on 31 July last year.

West Mercia police previously said the suspect was not arrested immediately after the incident on the A4103, near Shucknall in Herefordshire due to his requiring medical attention for serious injuries.

Donowho, from Malvern, Worcestershire, suffered multiple fractures in the crash, including both ankles, her sternum and her right hand.

Police previously told her that Calderon had been carrying out work “associated with the Secret Service” and was working on matters “that might come under the Official Secrets Act”.

Calderon, who was 22 at the time of the crash, left on a commercial flight to Texas on 25 November before a scheduled hearing at Kidderminster magistrates court the following month.

He is due to appear in court in Texas again on Friday for a detention hearing, according to court records.

The records suggest a full extradition hearing will be set at a later date.
