Abbey Clancy and Kerry Katona overcome with emotion as Atomic Kitten singer shares her struggles in rehab

Kerry Katona revealed on Abbey Clancy’s podcast that one of her most traumatic memories, witnessing her mother slit her wrist, played a significant role in preventing her from hitting rock bottom in rehab. The pop singer, who struggled with drug issues and depression, spent six weeks in rehab as an adult and admitted to having thoughts of self-harm. However, the thought of her children and not wanting them to feel unloved like she did as a child stopped her from going down that path. Before her abusive marriage or her ex husband’s drug death, Kerry witnessed frightening scenes at home that affected her later in life.

Speaking on Exhibit A, she told the English model about her most heartbreaking memory.

Kerry said: “[It was] watching my mum slit her wrist. I can get emotional and upset about it now I’m older.”

The Atomic Kitten singer went on to spend a stint of six weeks in rehab for depression as an adult, as well as dealing with alcohol and drug abuse.

She admits that at the time she was so low she thought about self harming too, but it was the thought of her children that stopped her.

Kerry realised that seeing her mum struggle in that way made her feel “unloved” when she was young, and didn’t want her own daughters to have the same experience.

She told Abbey: “I remember sitting in rehab and I couldn’t believe I let myself get so low.

“I kept thinking if this is in my DNA and if it is a genetic thing.

“The one thing I never want my kids to feel is unloved or not wanted by me, because that’s how I felt.

“So I thought if this is something that I might end up doing, I got Molly and Lilly tattooed on my wrist because I thought I’d be so selfish to put my kids through that no matter what’s going on my life.”

After her appearance on the podcast, Kerry went on to clarify: “I loved doing this with podcast Abbey but I do want to make it very clear I love my mum with all my heart and she too had no help and she’s made me who I am today.

“I really hope you get some hope and inspiration from this amazing podcast.”

Followers flooded to the comments to share how much they appreciated her vulnerability in sharing something that personal.

One person wrote: “She is a total inspiration. Kerry you are a brilliant mum and should be so proud of yourself.”

Another agreed: “Well done for speaking about it, you’re so brave and strong and an inspiration to others especially your babies.”
