Former Education Minister and United Right MK Yifat Shasha-Biton announced her resignation from politics after nine years, citing her “lack of ability to influence, contribute, and change reality.” Shasha-Biton, 51, began her career as a high school teacher and eventually earned a doctorate in education. She served in various roles in the Kiryat Shmona municipality before entering national politics with the Kulanu party in 2015.
In 2020, she joined Gideon Sa’ar’s New Hope party and served as Education Minister in the Lapid-Bennett government. Following the October 7 Hamas massacre, she became a minister-without-portfolio and member of the National Security Cabinet. She resigned from this role in March along with Sa’ar.
Shasha-Biton expressed her disappointment with the current political reality, stating that she did not have the tools to make a significant impact. She criticized the government’s handling of the ongoing war against Hamas, calling for a focus on advancing the war’s needs and consequences.
Despite her resignation, Shasha-Biton vowed to continue making her voice heard and hinted at a return to public activity in the future. United Right MK Michel Buskila will replace her in parliament.
Gideon Sa’ar praised Shasha-Biton as an “exemplary elected official” and expressed sadness at her decision to leave politics. He acknowledged her impressive professional journey and noted her dedication, patriotism, and qualifications.
Shasha-Biton’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Israeli politics, but she remains hopeful for better days ahead. Her decision to step back in order to move forward reflects her commitment to her values and beliefs.
