Legendary British singer and songwriter Steve Harley passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at his home in Suffolk after a short battle with cancer. Born on February 27, 1953, in Deptford, London, Harley was best known as the frontman of the rock group Cockney Rebel.
Cockney Rebel, formed in the early 1970s, had a successful run with five albums in the UK Albums Chart and twelve singles in the UK Singles Chart. Their most famous song, “Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me),” became a classic hit in 1975.
Harley’s personal life was just as fulfilling as his professional one. He was married to his wife Dorothy since February 1981, and they lived together in North Essex. The couple had two daughters, Kerr and Greta, who announced their father’s passing on social media.
In a heartfelt post, Greta shared, “We are devastated to announce that our wonderful Husband and Father has passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side. The birdsong from his woodland that he loved so much was singing for him.”
Steve Harley’s legacy as a talented musician and loving family man will be remembered by fans all over the world. May he rest in peace.
