India and European Union Collaborate on Battery Recycling Technologies for Electric Vehicles

New Delhi, 20th of June, 2024: The India-European Union Trade and Technology Council (TTC) Working Group 2 recently organized a startup matchmaking event focused on Battery Recycling Technologies for Electric Vehicles. This event featured twelve high-impact solution providers from both India and the EU, showcasing their innovative technologies in the field of battery recycling.

The event, which took place on June 20, 2024, aimed to promote sustainable practices, foster innovation, and strengthen economic relations between India and the European Union. The twelve startups selected to participate in the matchmaking event were chosen based on scientific merit, market readiness, and prospects for cooperation.

Among the startups that participated in the event were Lohum, LW3 Pvt Ltd., BatX Energies, Evergreen Lithium Recycling Pvt Ltd., Metastable Materials Pvt Ltd., and CENALL Waste Management LLP from India. From the EU member states, startups such as Alterity, Ecomet Refining, Eneris, Primobius, RockTech, and Tozero showcased their technologies.

The event kicked off with opening remarks from H.E. Mr. Saurabh Kumar, Ambassador of India to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the EU, and H.E. Mr. Herve Delphin, Ambassador, Delegation of the European Union to India. Both ambassadors highlighted the importance of collaboration in green technologies, especially in the rapidly growing electric vehicle sector.

Key interventions were also made by Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and Mr. Marc Lemaitre, Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission. They emphasized the significance of fostering innovation and cooperation in the battery recycling space.

As a next step, three startups from both India and the EU will be awarded the opportunity to visit each other’s regions for a week-long market immersion experience. This visit will allow the selected companies to engage with stakeholders, explore collaborations, and gain insights into the local market landscape, potentially leading to pilot projects or commercial opportunities.

The India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) was established in February 2023 to deepen cooperation in trade and technology between the two partners. The TTC consists of three Working Groups, with Working Group 2 focusing on Green and Clean Energy Technologies. The matchmaking event is one of the key short-term actions under this working group, aimed at advancing sustainable practices and innovation in the energy sector.

Overall, the startup matchmaking event served as a platform for collaboration, exchange, and potential investments in the field of battery recycling technologies for electric vehicles, further strengthening the partnership between India and the European Union in the green energy sector.
