It is understood Dr Mosley had no phone or means of contacting anyone during his trek after reportedly leaving his mobile at the holiday home.
The broadcaster and author vanished while out for a walk on the Greek island of Symi last Wednesday, sparking a massive search and rescue effort.
He was discovered dead early on Sunday morning.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Just One Thing with Michael Mosley last February, the 67-year-old recommended reducing screen time to improve health and well-being.

After chatting with an expert, analysing research, and daring a listener to spend less time on their phone, Dr Mosley concluded the episode by going on a stroll without his phone.
Reflecting on his experience, he said: “I’m really pleased to hear that Stuart has stuck to his smartphone challenge.
“I too have been giving it a go this week and today I have left my phone at home and I am out for a walk in the woods nearby.
“Now I have managed to crack down on and I have been limiting myself to about an hour and a half of phone time a day and making sure I’m only using my phone for things I really need, like the weather or chatting to my kids.
Dr Mosley added: “I have found that not having the constant distraction of my phone has actually helped me to be present in the moment and enjoy what I am doing more, so it has been a real positive.
“So there you are, put your phone down and it may just improve your sleep, your mood and your social life, as well as give your brain a well-deserved boost.”

It comes as tragic new footage of Dr Mosley shows him clutching an umbrella on his final walk two hours before he died.
The dad-of-four was seen walking past a house holding his umbrella at 2pm on Wednesday – half an hour after he started his journey back.
It is thought Dr Mosley, known for popularising the 5:2 diet and for his appearances on The One Show and This Morning, died just two hours later from heat exhaustion after getting lost.
Other CCTV seen by The Sun appeared to show Dr Mosley’s last movements – showing him struggling in Symi’s rocky terrain.
Grainy video showed the TV doc making his way down towards the wall between the hills and beach before sinking to the ground in the spot where his body was found four days later.
He is thought to have ended up on the brutal trek in at least 40C heat after taking a wrong turn in the town of Pedi at around 2pm.
His body was found tragically just 100 metres from the safety of the beach bar at Agia Marina – where he is thought to have died at around 4pm on Wednesday.
After an extensive four-day search his heartbroken wife Dr Clare Bailey Mosley, 67, said on Sunday: “He so very nearly made it.”
A coroner has concluded Dr Mosley sat down on the slope before losing consciousness.
The position he was found in – legs raised on a rock without any sign of external injuries – suggests Dr Mosley chose to lie down.
There is no indication that he was hit in the head or that he collapsed while walking, police sources said.
The Sun saw the TV favourite lying in a peaceful prone position.
It appears that Dr Mosley was following routine first aid advice used to prevent fainting.
The NHS website encourages individuals who are feeling faint to lie down with their legs raised if they are ever feeling faint.
He had walked for more than two hours and was found in a shaded spot by a wall having taken off his rucksack.
