Santa Rosa, the largest city in Sonoma County, has been recognized as one of the best places to live in the United States, according to a recent report by U.S. News & World Report. Despite dropping two spots from last year, Santa Rosa was ranked number 127 out of 150 cities on the list of “Best Places to Live in the U.S. in 2024-2025.”
The report analyzed data related to quality of life, job market, and value to determine the rankings. Santa Rosa scored highest in its job market index, with a score of 6.7 out of 10. The city also scored well in the quality of life index (6.5 out of 10) and value index (4.5 out of 10), earning an overall rating of 5.7.
According to U.S. News & World Report contributor Jessica Zimmer, Santa Rosa is a hub of economic activity in northern California’s wine country, attracting artists, young people, retirees, professionals, and those interested in wine and high-tech manufacturing. The city’s favorable weather, access to outdoor activities, public art, museums, live theater, and live music options were all contributing factors to its ranking.
However, the report noted that Santa Rosa offers a lower value in terms of housing costs compared to median household income when compared to similarly sized metro areas. Despite this, the city’s overall appeal and amenities make it a desirable place to live.
Other California cities that ranked high on the list include San Francisco (No. 22), San Diego (No. 46), San Jose (No. 70), and Santa Barbara (No. 71). On the lower half of the list were cities like Los Angeles, Fresno, and Stockton.
