Melbourne drops in ranking on U.S. News & World Report’s list of best places to live

Melbourne, Florida, once a top contender in the U.S. News & World Report Best Places to Live rankings, has taken a significant tumble in the latest list. Last year, the central Brevard city held the 15th spot, but this year it plummeted to No. 49.

The rankings, released on Tuesday, are intended to assist readers in making informed decisions about where to settle down. Factors considered in the evaluation process include data from sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, the U.S. Department of Labor, and U.S. News’ internal resources.

Mayor Paul Alfrey attributes Melbourne’s drop in ranking to affordability. He explained, “These rankings are great, but they also bring people to the city, which can make it less affordable. Although it may seem negative, we are still in the top 50 of best places to live. Melbourne is still an amazing city.”

U.S. News & World Report highlighted the influx of population in Melbourne, noting that urbanites, families, professionals, and retirees all enjoy life in the city. The report also mentioned Melbourne’s Eau Gallie Arts District, proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon, and the sight of satellite launches from Cape Canaveral.

The methodology changes for the 2024-2025 rankings led to more movement in the list, with Melbourne seeing decreased scores in desirability, job market, and quality of life categories. Despite this, the city remains a desirable place to live.

Other Florida cities that made the list include Naples (No. 1), Sarasota (No. 11), Pensacola (No. 31), Fort Myers (No. 37), Jacksonville (No. 56), Orlando (No. 68), Tallahassee (No. 75), Ocala (No. 78), Lakeland (No. 80), Port St. Lucie (No. 83), Daytona Beach (No. 96), and Miami (No. 123).

U.S. News used factors such as the Quality of Life Index, Value Index, Job Market Index, and Desirability Index to rank the cities. The rankings aim to provide consumers with a localized picture of what it’s like to live in a particular place.

Overall, while Melbourne may have dropped in the rankings, it remains a vibrant and attractive city for residents and visitors alike.
