Williamsburg senior Andrew McMonagle is on a mission at the PIAA Class 2A Championships in Hershey. After a tough injury last year, McMonagle has come back stronger and more determined than ever.
In the semifinals, McMonagle pinned Frazier’s Jackson Angelo in 3:19, securing his spot in the championship finals. He will be facing off against Southern Columbia’s Garrett Garcia, who defeated rival Caleb Close of Bald Eagle Area in overtime.
McMonagle, who wrestles for Huntingdon, is excited about the opportunity to compete for a state title. He has been working hard all season and is focused on finishing strong.
Altoona’s Luke Sipes also had a strong showing, advancing to the Class 3A semifinals and earning his third state medal. Despite a tough 1-0 loss in the semifinals to Bethlehem Catholic state champion Kollin Rath, Sipes will still be taking home a medal.
Unfortunately, not all area wrestlers were able to place in the top eight. Altoona teammates Braiden Weaver and Gavin Ciampoli were both shut out in the blood round, ending their tournament run.
Tyrone’s Kyle Scott and Braden Ewing, along with Penn Cambria’s Trent Hoover, are set to place in their respective weight classes in Class 2A. However, Northern Bedford’s Eion Snider and Rece Dibert, as well as Glendale’s Daniel Williams, were eliminated in the second round of consolations.
Overall, it has been an intense and competitive tournament for these talented wrestlers. The championship finals are set for 4 p.m., where McMonagle will look to cap off his impressive season with a state title. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting event.
