Iconic 80s pop star leaves Eurovision-winning group, leaving fans heartbroken

MUSIC fans around the world were left shocked and saddened today as The Fizz announced the departure of Mike Nolan after an incredible 43 years with the group.

The news was shared on social media platform X, where The Fizz revealed that Mike will be leaving the group at the end of the year. The remaining members, Cheryl Baker and Jay Aston, will continue as ‘The Fizz’ moving forward.

Fans expressed a mix of emotions upon hearing the news, with some showing sympathy for Mike and wishing him well in his future endeavors. Others expressed sadness at his departure but understood and respected his decision.

The Fizz, formerly known as Bucks Fizz, rose to fame in 1981 when they won Eurovision with their hit song “Making Your Mind Up.” The group went on to have a string of chart-topping hits and sold over 15 million records worldwide.

Despite their success, the group faced challenges over the years, including a near-fatal bus crash in 1984 that left all members seriously injured. In-house disputes led to constant lineup changes, but Cheryl, Mike, and Shelley Preston reformed the group as The Fizz in 2004.

The Fizz continued to perform and release albums, with their most recent release reaching number 29 in the UK album chart. However, financial struggles were a reality for the group, with Cheryl revealing that they received only a small percentage of their record sales.

The loss of the Bucks Fizz name due to a legal dispute also impacted the group’s ability to secure gigs, leading Cheryl to take on various odd jobs to make ends meet.

Despite the challenges they faced, Cheryl remains grateful for the experiences and memories shared with the group over the years. As they bid farewell to Mike Nolan, fans are left to wonder what the future holds for The Fizz and how they will continue to honor their legacy in the music industry.
