Lancashire police refer allegations against former Conservative MP Mark Menzies

The MP Mark Menzies is facing serious allegations of misusing campaign funds, which have now been referred to Lancashire police for review. The Labour party chair, Anneliese Dodds, has called for an investigation into the claims against Menzies, who lost the Conservative whip and was suspended as a trade envoy after reports surfaced that he used political donations to cover medical expenses and pay off individuals who allegedly locked him in a flat.

Menzies has denied the allegations, but the Tory party has stated that they are taking the claims seriously and looking into the matter. The handling of the situation has come under scrutiny, with accusations that the Conservatives failed to act promptly after being made aware of the allegations.

One of Menzies’ former campaign managers, Katie Fieldhouse, has expressed feeling let down by the party after raising concerns about Menzies’ actions. She claims to have received a late-night phone call from Menzies requesting cash to cover expenses, which was eventually paid by his office manager and reimbursed from campaign funds.

The allegations also include claims that donations meant for campaign activities were transferred to Menzies’ personal accounts and used for private medical expenses. Fieldhouse has stated that she reported her concerns to the chief whip in January but felt that the party did not take appropriate action.

The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, has called for an independent investigation into the handling of the situation, while Labour leader Keir Starmer has criticized the government for not taking action sooner. Menzies has resigned from the Conservative party pending the outcome of the investigation.

Menzies has maintained his innocence, stating that he has complied with all rules for declarations and will not be commenting further while the investigation is ongoing. The Conservative party has confirmed that they are investigating the allegations and take them seriously.

As the situation unfolds, questions remain about the handling of campaign funds and the actions of political figures involved. The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched as the allegations against Menzies continue to be scrutinized.
