Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has once again solidified its position as a top-tier institution, ranking among the top 20% of all universities in the world in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-25 Best Global Universities rankings. The university has been ranked No. 401 among the world’s 2,250 top universities, showcasing its excellence in academic research performance and global reputation.
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Fotis Sotiropoulos, attributes VCU’s success to the dedication and hard work of its faculty, who drive the university forward with groundbreaking research and innovative teaching methods. With a focus on excellence, impact, and access, VCU continues to redefine what it means to be an urban R1 research institution in the 21st century.
The latest rankings highlight 17 programs at VCU as among the world’s best, including the gastroenterology and hepatology program, which moved up six spots to No. 11, and the surgery program, which tied for No. 82. Dean of the School of Medicine and Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs, Art Saavedra, emphasizes VCU’s commitment to innovation, advancement, training, and compassionate clinical care across all disciplines.
Interim Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Arun Sanyal, expresses delight in the continued rise of VCU’s rankings in the gastroenterology-hepatology program. He credits the expertise and dedication of the faculty and staff for making the program a high-quality academic success and looks forward to further elevating it to a top five program in the world.
