Iowa City West Named Top Public High School in Iowa by U.S. News and World Report

Iowa City West has once again been recognized as the top public high school in Iowa, according to the latest rankings by U.S. News and World Report. The prestigious ranking, which evaluates high schools based on various key metrics, placed Iowa City West at the top of the list with an impressive overall score of 96.45 out of 100.

The rankings take into account factors such as college readiness, state assessment proficiency, graduation rate, and underserved student performance. Iowa City West excelled in all these areas, earning it the top spot in the state and the 626th spot nationally out of 25,000 public high schools.

This marks the third consecutive year that Iowa City West has been named the top high school in Iowa. The Iowa City Community School District also saw two other schools, Liberty High School and Iowa City High School, make it to the top 10 list in the state.

Principal Mitch Gross attributes the success of Iowa City West to the dedicated staff, hard-working students, and supportive families. He also highlighted the school’s diversity, with a minority enrollment of 53.4%, as a key factor in its ranking.

“We’re proud of our diversity, and we’re proud that our diversity makes us better,” Gross said. “It’s a testament to our dedicated staff, hard-working students, and supportive families. You need all those factors to come together to have a successful school, and we’re very fortunate to have all three of those aspects.”

Superintendent Matt Degner of the Iowa City Community School District expressed pride in all three of the district’s comprehensive high schools making it to the top 10 list in Iowa. He credited the recognition to the excellence in education and dedication found in the district.

In addition to Iowa City West, nearby Williamsburg High School also made it to the top 10 list, ranking ninth with a score of 88.38. The rankings serve as a testament to the hard work of students, educators, and the community in providing quality education in Iowa.

Overall, the U.S. News and World Report’s Best High School rankings for 2024 highlight the outstanding performance of Iowa City West and other top high schools in the state, showcasing the commitment to excellence in education in Iowa.
