UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill has been recognized as one of the top hospitals in the country for providing high-quality care to underserved populations. The prestigious accolade comes from U.S. News & World Report, which recently released its inaugural list of Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access.
Out of the 53 hospitals nationwide that made the list, UNC Hospitals is one of only four in North Carolina to earn this recognition. Janet Hadar, president of UNC Hospitals, expressed pride in the hospital’s commitment to providing excellent care to all patients, regardless of their background.
The announcement was made at an exclusive event in Washington, D.C., titled “The State of Equity in America.” U.S. News brought together leaders from various sectors to discuss solutions for addressing disparities in healthcare.
Tavia Binger, senior health data analyst at U.S. News, emphasized the importance of hospitals like UNC Hospitals in improving care for underserved communities. While the recognition is a positive step, Binger noted the ongoing need to prioritize healthcare for vulnerable populations facing social and economic challenges.
UNC Health, the state entity affiliated with the University of North Carolina system, operates 15 hospitals, 19 hospital campuses, and over 900 clinics. The organization’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians and others they serve, while also supporting the teaching mission of the UNC School of Medicine.
UNC Health has provided over $800 million in Uncompensated Charity Care in the past five years and has received numerous awards for quality care, patient safety, and overall patient experience. The recognition from U.S. News further solidifies UNC Hospitals’ commitment to equitable access and high-quality care for all.
