U.S. News ranks Delaware’s top high schools, but overlooks disparities

Delaware’s best high school nicknames ranked

Delaware Online/The News Journal recently released rankings of the nicknames of the First State’s 61 sports-playing high schools, including those that have closed. While school rankings based on academic performance often grab headlines, this unique ranking sheds light on the creative and spirited nicknames that represent each school.

The top three schools on the list were Charter School of Wilmington, Newark Charter School, and Cab Calloway School of the Arts. These schools not only have unique and memorable nicknames but also boast impressive academic achievements. However, the rankings also revealed some interesting insights into the demographics of these top schools.

One notable trend was that the top schools served fewer students with high needs compared to the state average. For example, six of the top 10 schools had a lower percentage of lower-income students than the state’s average enrollment. Additionally, none of the schools on the list served half the average number of students learning English as a second language.

Despite these disparities, the rankings highlighted the academic excellence of these schools, with indicators such as college readiness, state assessment proficiency, and graduation rate taken into account. The rankings serve as a reminder of the diverse and talented student body across Delaware’s high schools.

As the school year comes to a close, these rankings offer a unique perspective on the state’s high schools beyond traditional academic performance metrics. The rankings not only celebrate the spirited nicknames of each school but also recognize their achievements and contributions to the community.
