U.S. News & World Report recently released its 2024 rankings of the best high schools in the country, and four Rochester-area school districts have made it to the top 100 in New York state. The rankings were based on factors such as college readiness, math and reading proficiency, and graduation rates.
The top school in the nation this year is BASIS Peoria, a charter school in Arizona. In New York, 1,210 high schools were ranked, with all of the top 10 public high schools in the state located in New York City.
Among the Rochester-area districts, Pittsford Mendon High School ranked highest at No. 42 in the state and No. 335 nationally. Other local public schools that made the state’s top 100 include Pittsford Sutherland High School, Honeoye Falls-Lima Senior High School, and Brighton High School.
Other Rochester region high schools also made the list, with schools like Victor, Fairport, and Webster Thomas earning spots in the rankings. The rankings were based on factors such as math and reading proficiency, graduation rates, and college readiness.
U.S. News & World Report changed its ranking system in 2019 to make the list more comprehensive and easier to understand. The rankings take into account six factors and produce an overall score for each school between zero and 100.
Not all schools in the nation were ranked by U.S. News & World Report, as some schools were considered “unranked” due to various reasons such as not having enough assessment data available or being specialty schools with vocational orientations.
Overall, the rankings provide valuable insight into the performance of high schools across the country and can help students and parents make informed decisions about their education.
