Syracuse University Student-Athletes Gain Valuable Insights in Communication Strategies in Sports Course in Los Angeles
Student-athletes from Syracuse University recently had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of sports communication during a new Maymester course offered by the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA). The course, CRS-360 Communication Strategies in Sports, provided a study-away opportunity for student-athletes to explore the intersection of sports, media, and communication in Los Angeles.
During the course, students toured the offices of Fox Sports, SONY Pictures, and the NFL Network, where they received valuable tips on making presentations from former NFL champions and learned storytelling from sports broadcasters and entertainment producers. They also had the chance to hear from top executives in the sports and broadcasting industry, gaining insights into marketing, pitching TV show ideas, and giving TED talks.
Led by VPA professor Rachel Dubrofsky and program director Anna Proulx, the students experienced a mix of classes, business site tours, and activities during their time in Los Angeles. They were taught by renowned industry professionals and had the opportunity to meet with members of the LA Regional Alumni Council for roundtable discussions.
One of the highlights of the course was a tour of Fox Sports, where students met with show hosts and alumni who shared their experiences and insights. The students also had the chance to explore Los Angeles, attending a Dodgers game, hiking to the Hollywood sign, and networking with alumni in the area.
For student-athletes like LeQuint Allen Jr. and Kyle McCord, the course provided a glimpse into life after athletics and the potential career paths available in the sports industry.
