Sunak asserts UK’s robust capabilities to defend against cyber-attacks following calls to end China ‘naivety’ – live updates on politics

Rishi Sunak, the UK Chancellor, has reiterated the government’s stance on China being an “epoch-defining challenge” and emphasized the country’s strong capabilities to resist cyber-attacks. During a visit to Barrow-in-Furness, Sunak highlighted the increasing assertive behavior of China abroad and authoritarianism at home, labeling it as the greatest state-based threat to the UK’s economic security.

Sunak also emphasized the UK’s robust cybersecurity capabilities, pointing to the National Cyber Security Centre as a world-leading entity. He mentioned that other world leaders seek to learn from the UK’s cybersecurity capabilities, recognizing them as very strong.

The term “epoch-defining challenge” was previously used by Sunak to describe China in the government’s integrated defense and security review. The government has faced pressure to address China as a threat, with Sunak’s language indicating a slight hardening of the stance towards China.

The government’s investment in the defense and civil nuclear submarine industry in Barrow-in-Furness was also highlighted, with partnerships with industry giants like BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, EDF, and Babcock. The investment is set to total at least £763 million by 2030, with contributions from both the government and the private sector.

Overall, Sunak’s statements underscore the UK’s commitment to protecting itself from cyber-attacks and addressing the challenges posed by China, both in terms of economic security and cybersecurity. The government’s investments in key industries reflect a strategic approach to safeguarding national interests in the face of evolving threats.
