Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind the beloved children’s show Sesame Street, has announced its new CEO, Sherrie Westin. Westin, who has been with the organization since 1998 and served as president since 2021, will be only the second female CEO in Sesame Workshop’s history, following in the footsteps of Sesame Street creator Joan Ganz Cooney.
In a statement, Cooney praised Westin for her dedication to uplifting the lives of children and her proven leadership experience. The organization is currently undergoing a period of transformation, with negotiations for the renewal of Sesame Street’s deal with HBO and plans to “reimagine” the show starting with season 56 in fall 2025.
The Sesame Workshop Board of Trustees unanimously selected Westin for the CEO role, citing her deep knowledge, tireless efforts on behalf of children and families, and passionate commitment to the organization’s mission. Westin expressed her honor in carrying on Cooney’s legacy and her dedication to ensuring that Sesame Street continues to help children thrive for years to come.
With Westin at the helm, Sesame Workshop is poised to navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead as it continues its mission to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.
