The Kogi state government has announced the successful rescue of some students abducted from the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTEC) Osara, in a daring operation by security operatives and local hunters.
The students were kidnapped on May 9 by gunmen who stormed the university campus while the students were preparing for their examinations. The incident sparked immediate concern and led to a swift response from security agencies.
Kingsley Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information, confirmed the rescue operation in a statement issued on Sunday. He stated that the kidnappers were forced to retreat due to the overwhelming firepower from the joint security team.
Although specific details about the number of students rescued were not provided, Fanwo assured that efforts are underway to ensure the safe return of all abducted individuals.
The statement read, “This is to inform the general public that some of the students abducted by gunmen at the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara have been rescued safely by local hunters and other security agents.”
Fanwo also mentioned that a hunter and a DSS operative sustained injuries during the confrontation with the kidnappers and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Security operations are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining students still held in captivity. William Aya, the police spokesperson in Kogi, was unavailable for comment on the recent developments.
The successful rescue operation has brought hope to the community and raised awareness about the importance of security measures to protect students and prevent future incidents. The bravery and collaboration of security operatives and local hunters in this operation have been commended, and efforts continue to ensure the safety of all individuals in the state.
