Scotland is bracing for continued power cuts and travel disruption as Storm Kathleen unleashes high winds and heavy rain across the country. The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) has issued numerous flood alerts and warnings, with the Met Office also issuing a yellow wind warning for parts of the east and northern Highlands, the Isle of Skye, and the Hebrides.
With winds reaching up to 73mph in some areas, the impact of the storm is expected to be significant. Vincent Fitzsimons, Sepa’s flood duty manager, warned of coastal flooding in western areas and highlighted the danger posed by storm surges and large waves, particularly around high tides.
The potential for damage to buildings, power cuts, and danger to life has prompted warnings from both Sepa and the Met Office. Scottish ferry operator CalMac has already cancelled several sailings due to the weather, with more cancellations possible at short notice. Scotrail has also experienced disruptions to its services.
Across the UK, more than 140 flights were cancelled on Saturday, and in Ireland, thousands were left without electricity. As Storm Kathleen continues to batter Scotland, residents are urged to take precautions and avoid coastal areas where possible. Stay tuned for further updates on the storm’s impact.
