Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine has solidified its position as a leader in medical education within the state of Ohio, achieving top rankings in several categories in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings released on July 23.
The Heritage College has been ranked No. 29 in the nation and first in Ohio for producing the highest number of graduates practicing in rural areas. Additionally, the college has secured the top spot in Ohio for producing the highest number of graduates practicing in primary care (ranked No. 32 in the nation) and in health professional shortage areas (ranked No. 93 in the nation).
Executive Dean Ken Johnson, D.O., expressed the college’s commitment to addressing health care disparities and producing graduates dedicated to serving in rural and underrepresented fields. These graduates play a crucial role in improving health care access and outcomes for underserved populations.
The Department of Primary Care at Ohio University’s Heritage College offers a unique program where students spend an additional year on their medical education, gaining valuable experience in primary care and osteopathic manipulative medicine clinics. The program also provides opportunities for students to participate in community health programs and prepare for patient-centered care in rural and underserved communities.
With approximately 1,000 students attending the Heritage College each year, the college aims to enroll 95 percent of its students from Ohio to help meet the high demand for care in the state. The Primary Care Department program boasts a diverse group of faculty members who are dedicated to teaching, providing clinical services, and conducting clinical research.
Ohio University’s College of Health Sciences and Professions further supports the state’s health care workforce, ranking among the top health-focused colleges at any public university in the country.
