Pop star, 43, who had a number one hit 25 years ago, remains youthful despite secret battle with depression

SHE was the fresh-faced Norwegian pop star who briefly took the world by storm with her smash hit number one Unforgiveable Sinner. Now more than 25 years on, Lene Marlin has hardly aged a day. The 43-year-old, who has an active presence on social media, still has the even skin tone and whimsical good looks that propelled her to fame all those years ago. Having made her recording debut in 1998, Unforgivable sinner became the fastest-selling single in Norwegian music history. Soon followed her first album, Playing My Head, after which she went on to win an MTV Europe Award in 1999. Her single Where I am Headed featured in the French film Mauvaises Frequentations and became a top five hit in France and Italy. Indeed her song Sitting Down Here also became a top 5 hit in the UK Singles chart and reached number 5 in the Netherlands in 2000. In 2001, Marlin was also nominated for Best International Breakthrough Act at the BRIT awards alongside Pink, Jill Scott, Westlife and Kelis, losing to Kelis. The singer continued to work into the noughties releasing two more albums, Another Day and Lost in the Moment which were successful in Europe. Marlin also worked successfully as a singer songwriter and wrote a song for superstar Rihanna’s song- Good Girl Gone Bad. In September 2014, Marlin wrote an essay for Norway’s largest newspaper, Aftenposten, in which she candidly described her lifelong struggles with depression and a suicide attempt due to the pressures of work and fame. Then reality show fame beckoned after she featured on the Norwegian version of The Voice. In June 2020, Marlin announced her pregnancy on Instagram with her partner, the Norwegian actor Kare Conradi. Their daughter was born in October 2020.
