Former police officer Jordan Masterson has been sentenced to three and a half years in jail after being found guilty of misconduct in a public office. Masterson, who turned off his bodycam and had sex with a woman while responding to a 999 call, has been described as having committed a “gross breach of trust” by the judge.
The incident took place in Widnes, Cheshire, in December 2021, when Masterson visited the woman’s home in response to a disturbance report. The woman, known as female G, reported feeling violated and called the police to report the incident.
During the trial, Masterson claimed to feel “powerless” during the encounter and blamed the woman for ruining his career. However, the judge rejected his assertions and emphasized that the public expects police officers to act with integrity.
Masterson, who has since resigned from the force, was also handed an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the woman. His defense lawyer cited mental health issues as a contributing factor to his behavior.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has condemned Masterson’s actions, stating that they have no place in policing. Masterson has been placed on the barred list, preventing him from future employment in policing.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding trust and integrity in law enforcement and the consequences of abusing power.
