Cameron County Defeats Williamsburg in PIAA Class 1A Tournament
In a thrilling first-round matchup of the PIAA Class 1A tournament, Cameron County emerged victorious over Williamsburg with a final score of 62-47. Despite Williamsburg senior Rowan Gorsuch’s impressive performance, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, it was Cameron County’s seniors who stepped up when it mattered most.
With a four-point halftime lead for Williamsburg, Cameron County’s coach Marcus Brown rallied his seniors at the break, reminding them of the stakes at hand. The seniors responded with a strong second half performance, led by Ryan Shaffer with 24 points and Josh Smith with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Cameron County’s strong rebounding game, finishing with a 45-23 advantage on the boards, proved to be a key factor in their victory. Williamsburg coach Jeff Detwiler acknowledged the team’s struggles on the boards, stating that the lack of second-chance opportunities hurt their chances.
Despite the loss, Williamsburg finished the season with a 17-9 record and as the District 6 Class 1A runner-up. Looking ahead, Detwiler expressed confidence in the team’s growth and potential for the future.
Cameron County will now advance to the second round to face District 10 champion Farrell. The team’s strong performance in the first round sets the stage for an exciting matchup in the next round of the tournament.
