A man with an obsession with weaponry, who once requested to throw a grenade on a children’s television show, has been found guilty of causing an explosion in his home. Matthew Haydon, 48, sustained injuries in the blast at his family home in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, last year.
Haydon, who had a longstanding interest in explosives, told police he had been “researching” explosives following the Ariana Grande concert bombing. His mother found him injured and shouting for help after the explosion, which also caused damage to his home.
Police discovered chemicals, equipment, and handwritten notes related to explosives in Haydon’s home laboratory. Footage from a camera showed him conducting experiments with explosives, including detonating devices strapped to trees.
Samples of chemicals seized from the house included sensitive high explosives TATP and HMTD. Analysis of his clothing indicated HMTD was the explosive charge used in the explosion.
Haydon admitted to mixing chemicals that caused the explosion but disputed the level of explosive used. He acknowledged his complacency and failure to wear protective clothing during the experiment.
After being found guilty of causing an explosion likely to endanger life or property, Haydon was remanded in custody for sentencing at a later date. His dangerous fascination with explosives has led to serious consequences, highlighting the importance of handling such materials with caution and respect.
