The M25 in Surrey has reopened ahead of schedule after historic work was completed on the motorway. A five-mile stretch between junctions 10 and 11 was shut in both directions on Friday night and was not expected to reopen until Monday morning. However, National Highways announced on Sunday night that the road was now open in both directions following the successful demolition of the Clearmount bridge.
The closure of the M25 over the weekend was the first planned daytime closure of the motorway since it opened in 1986. Drivers were warned to stay at home as the closure was expected to cause significant traffic congestion, with some dubbing it a “carmageddon.”
RAC breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson warned that the closure of the M25, combined with the upcoming Easter getaway, could lead to a month of “double traffic trouble” for drivers in the London area. She advised drivers to plan ahead and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any long journeys.
The successful completion of the work on the M25 ahead of schedule is a relief for drivers who were bracing for major disruptions over the weekend. National Highways thanked everyone for their patience during the closure and expressed gratitude for bearing with them during the construction work.
