Latest Update on Constance Marten Trial: Aristocrat and Mark Gordon Allegedly Carried Baby in Lidl Bag While Still Alive

The trial of Constance Marten and Mark Gordon took a dramatic turn today as new evidence was presented in court. The couple is accused of gross negligence manslaughter of their newborn baby, Victoria, whom they took off-grid to avoid her being taken into care like their other children.

Lead prosecutor Tom Little KC continued his closing speech, highlighting CCTV footage that allegedly showed the baby concealed in a shopping bag. The prosecution claims that the baby was hidden in the bag for life, even during their camping trip on the South Downs where Victoria tragically died in wintry conditions.

Marten, 36, and Gordon, 49, deny the charges against them, including gross negligence manslaughter, perverting the course of justice, concealing the body, and child cruelty. The defense argued that the couple bought petrol to cremate Victoria after her death, supporting their claim that she died on January 9th.

Gordon’s lawyer, John Femi-Ola KC, disputed the prosecution’s portrayal of the couple as “callous and cruel,” describing Marten as a “lioness” with deep love for her children. The defense also argued that it is a mother’s choice whether to seek medical care during pregnancy, and that co-sleeping with a baby does not amount to neglect.

The trial has adjourned for the day, with jurors set to return for the remainder of the defense team’s summing up. The case continues to unfold at the Old Bailey, with new revelations and arguments being presented in court. Stay tuned for more updates on this gripping trial.
