Iran Launches Barrage of Missiles and Drones at Israel, Mostly Thwarted by Air Defense Systems
In a dramatic turn of events, air raid sirens blared across Israel on Saturday evening as Iran launched a barrage of more than 300 missiles and drones at the country in a retaliatory attack. However, Israeli officials reported that the assault was almost entirely thwarted by air defense systems and the assistance of the U.S. and other allies.
Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari revealed that the overwhelming majority of the weapons fired by Iran were intercepted before entering Israeli territory. Only a few ballistic missiles managed to land in the country, causing minor damage to one military base. Unfortunately, a 10-year-old girl was severely injured by shrapnel, but there were no additional casualties reported.
Hagari praised the IDF’s aerial and technological superiority, along with the strong fighting coalition that helped intercept the threats. He stated that 99% of the threats launched towards Israeli territory were successfully intercepted, marking a significant strategic achievement.
President Biden condemned the Iranian assault and confirmed that the U.S. had assisted Israel in taking down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles. U.S. forces intercepted dozens of missiles and UAVs launched from Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen en route to Israel.
The attack was Iran’s promised retaliation for an Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, earlier in the month. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps acknowledged the operation involving both missiles and drones, stating that the matter could be deemed concluded unless Israel makes another mistake.
As tensions escalate in the region, the U.S. and its allies are closely monitoring the situation. President Biden reaffirmed America’s commitment to Israel’s security and announced plans to coordinate a united diplomatic response with G7 leaders. The U.N. Security Council is expected to convene for an emergency meeting at Israel’s request.
The world is watching closely as the situation unfolds, with calls for restraint and accountability from all parties involved. The U.S. and its allies remain prepared for any further actions by Iran or its proxies, emphasizing the need for a calibrated response to prevent further escalation in the region.
