Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has made shocking claims from behind bars, stating that he is being treated like a “terrorist” and denied basic prisoner and human rights in a “death cell” at a high-security jail. The 71-year-old leader, who founded the Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, revealed these details in a rare interview with British publication ‘The Sunday Times’.
Khan described his confinement in a 7ft by 8ft cell typically reserved for terrorists, where he has minimal space to move and is under constant surveillance. He expressed frustration at being denied basic rights such as visitation and the use of a pencil and paper.
The former cricketer turned politician has been imprisoned at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for almost a year following his conviction in multiple cases, including corruption charges and an un-Islamic marriage case involving his wife, Bushra Bibi. Despite securing bail in some cases, Khan remains behind bars as he faces over 200 legal challenges.
Authorities have refuted Khan’s claims of mistreatment, with Information Minister Atta Tarar stating that the former premier enjoys luxurious conditions in jail, including access to a gym, kitchen, and presidential suites. However, Khan’s wife, Bushra, has expressed concerns about his safety, alleging that he is being subjected to inhumane conditions and given contaminated food.
The ongoing saga surrounding Imran Khan’s imprisonment highlights the political tensions and legal battles in Pakistan, as the former leader continues to fight for his rights from behind bars.
