Far-right protesters have violently clashed with police officers in major cities across the UK in the wake of “unforgivable” violence in Sunderland. Demonstrations taking place in several cities on Saturday, including Manchester, Liverpool Stoke and Belfast have already seen clashes with police and counter-protesters. In Liverpool, a chair thrown by demonstrators has hit an officer on the head as bricks, bottles and a flare were also thrown. The far right has drawn condemnation from MPs across the political spectrum after disorder in London, Manchester, Southport and Hartlepool over the past three days. On Friday, a far-right mob torched a Sunderland police station as eight people were arrested amid violent disorder that saw a mosque surrounded by rioters. The protests are thought to have been triggered in part by social media misinformation about the knife attack in Southport, Merseyside, on Monday, which led to the death of three children.

Prime Minister needs to ‘do more’ to restore public order, James Cleverly says
Shadow home secretary James Cleverly has said the Prime Minister and Home Secretary need to “do more” to restore public order and “send a clear message to the thugs”.
The Tory leadership contender said in a statement on Saturday: “In opposition Labour voted against public order measures we brought forward to give our police more powers to keep our streets clear, calm and safe, and Keir Starmer taking the knee sent completely the wrong message. There is never a justification for disorder like this.
“Now they are in Government Labour need to clamp down immediately on the violence that we have seen across the country and send a clear message to the thugs that they will be met with the full strength of the law.
“The public expects the Government to restore order. The Prime Minister and Home Secretary must do more to demonstrate that they are gripping this situation.
“They should be giving regular updates alongside the police so potential rioters know that they won’t get away with this and they must haul the tech companies in to ensure they are doing everything they can to prevent the spread of disinformation fuelling these events.”

Protests beginning in Blackpool
Tensions began to simmer over in Blackpool town centre at about 2.30pm.
Punks – in town for the annual Rebellion festival – squared off against men in football shirts, separated only by police.
“England till I die” and “we want our country back”, crowds chanted, alongside “oh, Tommy Robinson” and “protect our kids”.
“Where the f*** were you in Leeds?” others shouted.
Counter-protesters returned verbal volleys of “Nazi scum off our streets” as bottles were thrown and minor skirmishes broke out.
One woman holding a placard saying “Thugs (and) racists not welcome” had it torn from her hands as crowds pushed from the town hall to the Metropole and as sirens filled the summer air.
