Dr. Julianne McCall appointed as the new CEO of CCST

Julianne McCall, PhD, has been selected as the next chief executive officer of the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST), as announced by the Board of Directors. McCall, currently serving as the Director of Precision Medicine in the California Governor’s Office of Planning & Research, will take on her new role starting September 1, 2024.

With an impressive background in both research and policy, McCall brings a wealth of experience to her new position. She has previously worked on public health and research policy in the California Senate Office of Research and served as a CCST Science and Technology Policy Fellow. Her work in precision medicine and cross-sector health policy has earned her recognition, including being named the 2023 Government Official of the Year by Biocom California.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, McCall is actively involved in the community, teaching graduate courses in science policy at UC Davis and UC Riverside, serving as CEO and Managing Publisher of the Journal of Science Policy & Governance, and participating in various leadership programs and initiatives focused on science and technology.

As the new CEO of CCST, McCall will play a key role in advancing science and technology policy in California, working closely with state and national leaders to provide evidence-based advice and strengthen public policy. Her appointment has been met with enthusiasm from the CCST Board of Directors, who have high expectations for the organization under her leadership.

CCST, established in 1988, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that provides independent assessment of public policy issues related to science and technology in California. The organization collaborates with leading experts in the field to ensure that state policymakers are informed by scientific knowledge and innovation.

McCall’s appointment as CEO marks a new chapter for CCST, as the organization continues to serve as a thought leader in the science policy community and deepen its ties with partner institutions such as the University of California, Stanford University, and NASA’s Ames Research Center. With her passion for science policy and commitment to non-partisan research, McCall is poised to lead CCST into a future of continued growth and impact.
