US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has raised concerns about Chinese attempts to influence the upcoming US elections, despite earlier assurances from Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Blinken made these comments during an interview with CNN’s Kylie Atwood at the end of his three-day trip to China, where he met with top Chinese officials, including Xi.
Blinken reiterated President Joe Biden’s message to Xi last November, urging China not to interfere in the 2024 US presidential elections. However, Blinken stated that the US has seen evidence of Chinese attempts to influence and interfere in the elections, which is unacceptable.
In addition to election interference, Blinken also addressed China’s support for Russia’s defense industry, which is enabling Russia to escalate its military actions in Ukraine. He warned that the US would take further action if China continues to support Russia, in addition to existing sanctions on Chinese entities.
Despite Beijing’s denial of interference in US elections and its neutrality in the Ukraine war, Blinken emphasized the need for China to act responsibly and not support actions that destabilize global security.
Furthermore, Blinken defended the right to protest in the US, including recent pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses. He acknowledged instances of antisemitism at these protests but emphasized the importance of freedom of expression in democracies.
