Analyzing WVU’s spring tilt is challenging without addressing tackling

The West Virginia Mountaineers put on quite a show for their fans at the Blue-Gold Spring Game, with a mix of entertainment and football action. Despite the distractions, fans were able to take away some key observations from the event.

One major takeaway was the importance of tackling in football. The game lacked the physicality and excitement that comes with proper tackling, as defenders only had to touch the ball carrier. This rule change limited the explosive plays and highlights that fans love to see.

Quarterbacks Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol showed flashes of potential but also made some mistakes, including a few interceptions. The lack of tackling made it difficult for Greene to showcase his running ability, as he was often whistled dead before breaking free.

The new uniforms, celebrity coaches, and skill competitions added to the fun atmosphere of the event, but ultimately the focus was on the players and their development. Linebacker Josiah Trotter, who missed last season due to injury, made a strong impression with big hits and an interception.

Overall, the Spring Game was a success in terms of entertainment and fan engagement. While the final score may not have mattered, the event provided a glimpse of what fans can expect in the upcoming season. Now, the team will shift their focus to summer workouts as they prepare for the upcoming season.
