Israel’s allies and Middle East players have raised concerns over the escalating conflict in the Gaza Strip, as Israel prepares for a potential offensive on Lebanon to confront the Hezbollah militia. The US, Germany, and Turkey have all expressed worry about the consequences of a wider war in the region.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans to attack Lebanon, accusing the West of supporting these actions. Erdogan called for solidarity with Lebanon and warned of a “big catastrophe” if the conflict spreads further.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also issued warnings against regional escalation. Baerbock emphasized the need to prevent a war between Israel and Lebanon, while Austin highlighted the potential for a regional conflict with devastating consequences.
In light of the heightened tensions, Germany urged its citizens to leave Lebanon due to the increased risk of terror attacks. The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, triggered by Hamas attacks on October 7, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.
As the situation remains volatile, the international community is calling for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and avoid a full-blown regional war. The UN’s humanitarian affairs official described the potential consequences of such an escalation as “apocalyptic,” underscoring the urgent need for peaceful resolution and de-escalation.
